  • The Rise of China: Understanding the Re-emergence of a Global Power
    A Public Lecture Series Sponsored by the duPont Scholars, Spring 2008
    A reception will follow each lecture.

      Chunmiao Zheng, "Will China Run out of Water?"
    • Chunmiao ZhengIn the face of rapid industrialization and an annual population growth that totals approximately 14 million, water scarcity may be China ’s greatest crisis looming on the horizon. Dr. Chunmiao Zheng, an internationally recognized expert in groundwater hydrology, will examine this issue and its very real environmental, economic, and human implications. Dr. Zheng is a professor of hydrogeology at the University of Alabama . He is a also a visiting professor and founding director of the Center for Water Research at Peking University in China and is currently conducting research on more effective management of water resources in the North China Plain and the Ordos Basin in western China. Among his various awards and honors, Dr. Zheng is the president-elect of the International Commission on Groundwater of the International Association for Hydrologic Sciences and has received the John Hem Award for outstanding scientific contribution to the understanding of ground water.

      Patrick Harker, "China and UD: The Importance of Global Partnerships"

      Peoples Bank - Patrick HarkerChina plays a major role on the world stage, in areas ranging from business to politics to the environment. University of Delaware President Patrick Harker, who is fostering agreements between several Chinese universities, will discuss the need for engagement between the University of Delaware and China. Americans must have the opportunity to travel to and learn from Chinese colleagues if they are to understand the complexities of the 21st century. Patrick T. Harker is the University’s 26th president, a position he assumed on July 1, 2007. Prior to his appointment at the University of Delaware, Dr. Harker was the Dean of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the Reliance Professor of Management and Private Enterprise. He currently serves as a Trustee of the Goldman Sachs Trust and is a founding member of the Board of Advisors for Decision Lens, Inc. In June 1991, President George H. W. Bush named Dr. Harker as a White House Fellow, one of 16 chosen in the country. In this position, he spent 1991-92 as a Special Assistant to the Director of the FBI, as well as participating in a variety of off-the-record discussions and trips with national leaders.
