Freshman Honors Program 1976
Jim Parker (BA, Kenyon College, 1980) traveled from the midwest to Dover, DE, thirty years ago to join the inaugural U of D Freshman Honors Program. He is now in Indianapolis where he is the chief of staff to the CEO of WellPoint, Inc., a health benefits company. He has great memories of the year spent in Dover, and would love to hear from other "fippers"!
Victor S. Sloan moved to consulting for a year after a year at a start up biotech. Now, he is at Celgene helping to build an autoimmune diseases franchise. His daughters are now nine and four-and-a-half and get along incredibly well about 70 percent of the time.

Krystyna F. Salvetta (History) and husband Jack will be celebrating their ninth anniversary this July. She's doing volunteer work in a local school, helping first graders learn to read. Krystyna would love to work with some sort of literacy campaign when she retires!

Ken Cowan (Computer & Information Sciences) recently started a new job as a consulting technologist in the office of the CTO of EMC Corp in Hopkinton, MA. He lives in Hollis, NH with his wife, Jan, and 10-year-old twins, Claire and Greg. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, reading, snow boarding, weight lifting, and learning to sail his sailing dinghy in the waters around Mystic, CT.
Terrence (Terry) Harvey (Business; Masters, University of Delaware, 1997; Ph.D., University of Delaware, 2007) just joined the faculty of the Computer Science Department at UD. Stop by and visit him in Smith Hall!
Ann Morgan Lemon (Art) has been teaching in the Visual Communications Program at UD since spring of '06. She is still working at ad agencies in New York and elsewhere. Her son Amos is nine. She would love to hear from any FHPs of '79-'80 if you're out there!

Richard G. Dambra (International Relations; MA, Social Studies Education, 1993, Fordham University; MS Economics, 2004, Fordham University) teaches at Somers High School in New York. He's been blessed with two boys and a wonderful wife. A warm hello to all my fellow FHPs.
Mary Gracey (Communication and Spanish; MA, Northwestern University, 1986) In January 2006, Mary helped launch "Balance by Design," a state of the art diagnostic center specializing in vestibular diagnostics and therapy.
Using cutting edge technology like Rotary Chair, Computerized Dynamic Posturography and other neurodiagnostic testing, patients suffering from dizziness, vertigo and imbalance are helped through a multi-disciplinary team approach. Combined with the career of mothering, (a son, age four and daughter, age six) life is dynamic and fulfilling!
Daniel C. Schlotterbeck (Accounting) just returned from an exciting business trip to Shanghai and Beijing, China where his company, Kinedyne Corporation, is evaluating the possible expansion of an existing business investment.
Carolyn Ann Thorp (Political Science; JD, Southwestern University School of Law) is engaged to be married to Lt. Colonel Stevan C. Rich, JAG, USARC, currently stationed in Djibouti, Africa.

John Michael Nahay (Biochemistry; MS, Rutgers, 1991; Ph.D., Rutgers, 2000) recently finished taking a biotechnology course, lab, and microbiology course at a local community college just to keep his mind sharp and to learn a little more biology. He wrote, "Can't afford any more courses thereafter. My good health insurance ends this year. Will be spending down savings even faster now starting January. Last full time job ended 2001. Looking for jobs in socialist and communist countries only."

Stephen F. Betz (Chemistry; Ph.D., Chemistry, University of North Carolina) is currently an associate director of Endocrinology & Metabolism at Neurocrine Biosciences in San Diego.
Jennifer J. Johnston (Chemistry/Life Science; Ph.D., Human Genetics, Yale University) has two children ages nine and eleven. She is currently a scientist for the National Institute of Health at the National Human Genome Research Institute.
Barbara (Batha) L'Amoreaux (Communications; MS, Organizational Dynamics, University of Pennsylvania, 1998) is director of Marketing & Sales Administration for MATCOR, Inc. in Doylestown, Pennsylvania -- an engineering design and manufacturing company specializing in cathodic protection for corrosion.
Dianne K. Salerni (Education; Masters of Education, University of Pennsylvania, 1989) published her first novel in May 2007, a historical novel about the Fox Sisters, two adolescent girls who invented seances and spirit-rapping in 1848 as a hoax. Julie Bauerle (Medical Technology) was recently promoted to the marketing manager within Johnson & Johnson's Ortho Clinical Diagnostics' Donor (OCD) Screening business. She has been with OCD/Johnson & Johnson for 18 years. She received two awards in 2007 recognizing her outstanding support of customer and business needs.
Colleen McMahon (English and History; MA, History, Emory, 1995) worked as a teacher and a technical writer before joining the East Point Police Department in Georgia as a crime scene technician in 2000. In 2003 she went to the police academy and became a certified police officer. After working as a patrol officer for three years, Colleen was promoted to Criminal Investigations in 2006, where she currently works specializing in fraud, forgery and identity theft. She lives with her partner of 12 years, Janalynn Jones, in East Point, GA. They have three dogs and also foster dogs for a local rescue group.
Jonathan Roland (Chemical Engineering; MA, Teaching, Towson University, 1992) and his wife, Kristen, live in Baltimore County, MD. After working for three years as a chemical engineer/environmental consultant, Jon got his Master of Arts in Teaching at Towson University in 1992. Since then he has been teaching Physics and Advanced Placement Physics in Baltimore County Public Schools. He and Kristen have four children: Darlene (14), Jonathan (12), David (10) and Daniel (6). In 2001 Jon earned National Board Certification, and in 2004 was awarded a Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching by President Bush.

Stewart Hen (Chemical Engineering) and family are doing well in New York. Stewart continues to focus on venture capital and private equity investing in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. He says hello to fellow chemical engineers and honors program people from the class of 1989.
Suzanne Sczubelek Herel (English Literature; MFA, Creative Writing, Emerson College - Boston, 1998) was named deputy business editor of The San Francisco Chronicle, where she has worked as a reporter and editor since 1999. Also this year, Suzanne received the Hearst Corporation's Eagle Award, the highest honor the company bestows on its newspaper employees. The award recognized her work in creating the paper's Continuous News Desk, which brought together
the traditional newsroom and online operation, SFGate.com.
Julie (Williams) Regan (Communications; Master's, Journalism, Temple University) was promoted in 2007 to an executive position responsible for all media relations, customer service, public education and legislative affairs for the bi-state environmental planning agency at Lake Tahoe.

Hope (Robbins) Odell (Arts & Science; MEE, Wilmington University, 1994) is in her 14th year of teaching in Delaware. Husband, Wayne,
and she have a six year old son named Andrew and live in Landenberg, Pennsylvania with their Jack Russell, Yaddle. She'd love to hear from Honors Program folks -- especially Dickinson Fellows!
Paul Marquez (Accounting; JD, Widener Delaware Law School, 1994) left Marks Paneth & Shron as director of commercial litigation to become principal of Sigma Valuation Consulting (SVC) in New York City. SVC specializes in the forensic valuation of private companies, intellectual property, valuation for financial reporting, and litigation support services.

Jeff Riegner (Civil Engineering; MS, Engineering, University of California at Berkeley, 1991) is vice president of Whitman, Requardt and Associates, LLP,
an engineering and planning consulting firm; he manages the firm's Wilmington office. Jeff and his wife, Jennifer (Lydon) Riegner (UHP Class of 1990, Biology and Psychology) settled only two blocks from their freshman Honors dorm! They enjoy raising their sons, ages ten, nine, and seven.
Julie Walko (English and German; MSLS, Catholic University, 1994; BSN, University of Virginia, 2003) married partner, Patty, in October 2006. She changed careers from librarianship and software project management to become a registered nurse in 2003. She's been working in neuro ICUs since graduation.
Vanessa (Maxwell) Weidman (English; MBA, Indiana University, 1997) married Chris Weidman in 2000 and gave birth to twins, Nicholas and Avery, in August 2003.

Norlisa V. Abrenica-Keffer (Biochemistry) is currently a stay at home mom to her four-and-a-half year old twins, Frankie and Sammy (Mary Frances and Samuel). She's married to Gordon (and living in Seattle) for what will be nine years this summer, and life is well!
Martin Carlisle (Math and Computer Science; Ph.D., Computer Science, Princeton, 1996) is a full professor of computer science at the United States Air Force Academy. His research focuses primarily on computer science education and computer security. He also helps lead the cadet ministry of the Officers' Christian Fellowship.
D. Betsy McCoach (Economics and Foreign Languages & Literatures) is an assistant professor in the Educational Psychology Department in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut, where she teaches graduate courses in measurement, educational statistics, and research design. Betsy is the co-editor of a new book, Multilevel Modeling of Educational Data, available in the Winter of 2008, and she is the co-editor of the Journal of Advanced Academics. She and her husband of eight years, Del Siegle, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on November 17, 2007.
Christina (Gamble) Rutheiser (Communications; MA, Publications Design, University of Baltimore; BS, Holistic Nutrition, Clayton College of Natural Health; CNHP certification, National Association of Certified Natural Health Professionals) is currently a doctoral candidate at Clayton College of Natural Health for Doctor of Natural Health. Ursula Sadiq (Mechanical Engineering; M.Eng., Mechanical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, 1993; MS, Material Science, Carnegie Mellon University, 1994) is designing new engineering design software for the process and power industry; speaking at conferences; blogging about it at http://www.in-the-pipes.com; and she's taken up glassblowing as a hobby.

Eric Peter Bjorkstedt (Biology and English; Ph.D., Stanford University, 1998) and wife, Kim, welcomed their first child -- a little girl named Piper Caitlyn -- to the world in January 2007. Eric continues his work, based out of Humboldt State University, to develop and expand a fisheries oceanography research program off northern California.

David Chen (Business & Economics) was recently promoted to captain of Jones Station, a special operations company, in the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. The station responds to fire and emergency medical service calls in the South Severna Park area of the county. Tracy Friswell-Jacobs (Education) and husband Scott just had their second baby, a girl this time! Ella Morgan was born November 30 -- three years, one month and one day after her big brother, Benjamin Charles. Ben went to his first UD football game on Homecoming, and again to the Villanova game. He had a blast and loves to sing the Delaware Fight Song to his new little sister. Scott and Tracy, along with their business partners, Bryan and Laura Russo, opened their own performing arts school, Delaware Arts Conservatory, on October 1, 2007 (http://www.delarts.com). Their 60+ students take classes in all forms of dance, acting, and musical theatre in the Delaware Swim and Fitness facility in Pike Creek. They look forward to adding music and vocal lessons, as well as visual arts classes in the fall of '08. Tracy's education training is definitely useful when dealing with students from ages three to 63!!
Russell Porter (Finance; MBA, New York University Stern School of Business, 1999) and wife, Kristen (Flegel) Porter (BE, '93, also MBA, NYU Stern School of Business, 1993) are living in Madrid, Spain with their two sons while Russell is on a foreign assignment with IBM as a financial manager for Southwest Europe. They're active in the expatriate community there, involved with the Boy Scouts, Madrid League Baseball, and their local Catholic parish. They've taken advantage of the last two years traveling around Europe on weekends and holidays and showing their boys more castles and cathedrals than they ever imagined existed.

Christina Hamilton (General Plant Science; MS, Plant and Soil Science, University of Delaware, 1998) is working as assistant director and NIMSS system administrator for the North Central Regional Association of AES Directors, a position hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She lives in Madison, Wisconsin with her husband David Devilbiss (1994, AS) and their two dogs. She's making the best of the snow and cold by going cross-country skiing whenever possible.
Angela Burkholder De Oliveira (Spanish Education; MA Secondary Education, University of Alabama, 2000) has been in South America ever since she graduated from UD. After a stint in Bolivia where she met her Brazilian husband, she moved to Ecuador and is now living in Brazil. She teaches high school English in an American School in Salvador.
Rebecca Heebner Smith (Elementary Education; MBA, Clemson University, 1999) is living in Mooresville, North Carolina with husband, Eric, and their two children -- Emma (5) and Jack (2). She is a senior financial analyst in the Financial Planning Analysis Department of Lowe's Companies, Inc., the home improvement retailer. They miss their friends and family in Delaware and return as often as they can!

Susan (List) Hauske (Marketing & Management; JD, Villanova University, 1998) married David Hauske in June 2006 and is a full equity partner with Tybout Redfearn & Pell, a civil defense litigation firm in Wilmington, Delaware.
Kathryn (McKay) Johnston (Visual Communications) was married on October 21, 2007, to Jason Johnston in Baltimore, MD.
Holly (Bott) McKenna (Family and Community Services) married Sean McKenna on September 29, 2007 at Holy Child Church, Wilmington, Delaware. The reception was held at Archmere's Patio. They live in Marlton, NJ.

Gabrielle Conley Moore (Biology) has two beautiful boys, Jackson (7) and Lucas (4). They live in Colorado Springs where her husband, Ken, is stationed out of Ft. Carson. He has served the last year in Iraq and will be retiring in May 2008. Gabrielle is active at her children's schools and also with the unit's Family Readiness Group.
Michael Quariadi (Mechanical Engineering) is a four-time champion of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, currently working as a manufacturing engineer at John Deere Des Moines Works.

Darlene Gorton (Mechanical Engineering) has been working at W.L. Gore since 1996, really enjoys the company and her work, and recently had two of her team's patent applications granted by the Patent Office. In other news, she is a certified yoga teacher, offering classes locally in Elkton, MD and Newark, DE, and will be getting married in May 2008.
Malou (Frederiksen) Howland (Marketing; MBA, University of Florida, 2001) is director of marketing for The Nielsen Company.
Mark Parker (Civil Engineering) was made a partner at Landmark Engineering in January 2004. He and his wife Meghan have a three-year old boy named Ethan and are expecting their second child at the end of February. They built a house in Middletown, Delaware in 2000 and still happily reside there.
Adria "Nikki" Snyder (Biology Education) married Sean Snyder in 2004. Their daughter Samantha was born Feb. 5, 2007.

Robert R. Banks (Mechanical Engineering; MBA, University of Maryland, 2006) married Stephanie Boyd in 2004 and has a six month old daughter, Aria Banks. He and his family are moving to India for a General Electric work project.
David DeFeo (Biology; MD, MCP-Hahnemann University of Medicine, 2001) joined Salem Chest Specialists in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in July 2007 as a physician, after completing a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in June 2007. His wife, Beth (Smullen) DeFeo (1997, Chemical Engineering) is currently a stay at home mom to their two daughters, Kate (4) and Evie (9 months).
Gregory F. Grube (English and Art History; BS, Dance, The University of Wisconsin-Madison) danced professionally in Madison Opera productions Rigoletto and The Pearl Fishers. Also made a special appearance in Madison Ballet's The Nutcracker as larger than life Mother Ginger.
Leslie R. (McNair) Jackson (English; JD, Touro College of Law) and husband gave birth to a son, Vincent Eamon, on February 11, 2006. They recently moved to Middletown, Delaware.
Heather McCabe (English) is currently the copy chief at ELLE Magazine in New York City and lives in Brooklyn.
Edith Myers-Arnold (Biology; Ph.D., University of Pen nsylvania, 2003) joined the biology faculty of Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ as an assistant professor (tenure-track) in 2008.
Amanda (Magallanes) Pacheco (Psychology; M.Ed., University of Virginia, 1999) graduated in December 2007 with an Ed.D. from the University of Central Florida in Higher Education Leadership.
Theresa E. Pandok (Liberal Studies; MD, Jefferson Medical College, 2001) is finishing a cardiology fellowship at New York University Medical Center.
Michael Rich (Physics and English; JD, Stanford Law School, 2000) is currently a visiting assistant professor at Capital University School of Law in Columbus, Ohio. He will be joining the faculty there as a tenure-track assistant professor in the fall, specializing in criminal law, whistle blower statutes, and professional responsibility.
Stephanie L. (Strajcher) Schaefer (Political Science; MS, Education, St. John's University, May 2008) is a Social Studies teacher in New York City and is expecting her second child. She is a mom to five-year-old Jacob who loves the Blue Hens!
Steven H. Silberg (Fine Art, 1997; MFA, Photography/Digital Imaging, Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), 2004) has been teaching as an adjunct instructor of Electronic Media and Culture (at MICA) since 2004 and as a Lecturer in Photography (at University of Maryland, Baltimore County) since 2005. He is a practicing pixel-based/new media artist. Current and past artworks can be found at his web site: http://www.shsarts.com. In August 2006, Steven was invited to participate in Code:Blue, the 3rd international Beijing New Media Art Festival held at the Millennium Monument in Beijing, China. From December 2007 through January 2, 2008, he exhibited new artworks in a solo exhibition in Baltimore. In November 2007, he was invited to exhibit as part of a survey of contemporary digital artworks at Missouri State University.
Aaron M. Scurto (Chemical Engineering; Ph.D., Chemical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, 2002) is in his fourth year as a professor of chemical engineering (and recently, chemistry) at the University of Kansas. He will be eligible for tenure in the next year or so. He and wife, Stephanie, are doing very well, though extremely busy. Stephanie (neé Smith) was also a part of the UHP at Delaware, but finished her BA degree at the University of Indiana after they were married and moved to Indiana for Aaron's graduate education. She is now in a Ph.D. program in literature at the University of Kansas.

sister, Sadie Lucile, was born in February 2005.

Kerri Wakefield (Biochemistry; MEd, College Counseling, 2001) is a first-year Ph.D. student studying higher education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She plans to pursue a career in academic or student affairs administration upon graduation.

Thomas A. Gorman (Biological Sciences; MD, University North Carolina) had a baby in October 2006. He will finish residency in emergency medicine in June 2008.
Aldwyn Hamilton (French Studies and International Relations; D EA - French Masters, Political Science, Institut d'Etudes Politiques, 2000) just moved to Washington D.C. after living in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uruguay over the past four years. She is also getting married this March to Jose Cabrera Macchi.
Cathy (Du) Louie (Accounting; CPA, 2000) is working as the controller for a real estate development company in New York City. She has been happily married for seven plus years with two children, Timothy (4 1/2) and Rachel (8 months).
Rachel A. (Hunt) Martin (Agriculture) gave birth to her first child (a boy) on June 29, 2006. His name is Harlan Antonio Martin.
Marcia Nickle (Sociology and Women's Studies; MA, University of Delaware, 2000) and husband Matthew (1998, BE) welcomed their first child, Madeline Olivia, on June 16, 2007. She weighed seven pounds seven ounces at birth and was 20 inches long.

Marc Lipschultz (Civil Engineering; Master's Civil Engineering, Villanova University, 2004) works for McCormick Taylor, Inc. and recently relocated to their Glen Allen, Virginia office and received a promotion to lead traffic engineer for the Virginia market.
William Porter (European History; MS, Higher Education Management, University of Pennsylvania, 2002) was selected as a winner of the Fulbright Administrator Exchange for 2007-2008. He just completed an exchange this past fall, spending two months in Bulgaria and hosting a Bulgarian administrator for two months here.
Kenneth E. Remy (Liberal Studies and Biology; MD, Jefferson Medical College, 2004) is completing a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital/Case Medical Center/University Hospitals of Cleveland. He recently completed a term as National Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Resident's Association President. Kenneth is also a new recipient of the Gary Onady Top National Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Resident Award winner and will begin a Pediatric ICU fellowship at Columbia University in New York City, possibly with adult pulmonary and critical care as well.

Jason B. Smith (Marketing) married Paula Denise Ledbetter in 2004. He has two step-children (Breona - 18, Haze - 14) and a daughter (Morgan - 2). He started an online medical uniform store four years ago and recently added a retail location in Portland, Oregon. Before opening the store, he was general manager at RAD Technologies, an electronics contract manufacturer, overseeing approximately 70 employees in sales, engineering, manufacturing and warehousing. He loves Portland, but misses all the wonderful cities on the East Coast.

Daniel Robert Dries (Biochemistry; Ph.D., University of California - San Diego, 2007) began as a post-doctoral researcher in January 2007 in Dr. Gang Yu's lab at UT-Southwestern Medical Center. He acquired a 3-year post-doctoral NRSA from the NIH in October 2007. He was engaged to Sara A. Titen (Ukiah, CA; Univ. of Utah alumna) in April 2007. Wedding date is October 3, 2008 in Pennsylvania.
Mary Ellen Ensign (Mathematics; MSEd, SUNY Cortland, 2005) welcomed identical twin girls, Eleanor Magee and Catelyn Magee, on June 11, 2007. She is on maternity leave from her job as a high school Math teacher this year, and loves being able to spend the days with her girls!

Lalena Luna (Psychology) has been employed as a program coordinator in the Activities & Programs Office of the University of Delaware since January 2004. She was recently selected as diversity coordinator for the 2009 National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) National Convention. Also, Lalena was elected local director for the New Castle County Jaycees (Junior Chamber).

Michael A. Cacciapaglia (Wildlife Conservation) worked as a wildlife research technician in Tennessee, Mississippi, California, and Hawaii, primarily on endangered species recovery. He is currently working towards his Master's degree in resource conservation at the University of Montana.
Emily Wimberley Cornwell (Art History Conservation; Master's of Arts Management; Carnegie Mellon University, 2007) earned a Master's of Arts Management from the Heinz School of Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University in May 2007. She is currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area and working in non-profit management.
Hendrik-Jan Francke (Psychology) was married in 1998 to Laura Bachman. Their son Kieran was born in July 2001 and daughter Annika was born in July 2003. They launched the design firm Bright Orange Thread in 2006.

Bret Strogen (Environmental Engineering; MS, Environmental Engineering, UC Berkeley, 2004) returned to academia after working for three years as a project engineer for Weston Solutions, a large environmental consulting firm based out of West Chester, PA. In January 2008, he returned to UC Berkeley to begin a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, working with a team of researchers to compare the life cycle environmental and economic impacts of biofuels to petroleum fuels.

Gina Kaye (Psychology and English/Journalism) recently purchased a 1914 brick Victorian home in Lewes, DE that will soon be the Savannah Inn bed and breakfast. They are currently in the middle of renovation work and will be open for business in April 2008! The Savannah Inn, a five guestroom bed and breakfast, is centrally located in downtown, historic Lewes.
Amanda L. Koppel (Entomology) is at Virginia Tech in the third year of her Ph.D. program in Entomology. In summer 2007, she researched stink bugs in China (National Science Foundation grant). Amanda will be finished with her dissertation in spring 2010.

Geoffrey Oxberry (Chemical Engineering; MChe, University of Delaware, 2006) received a Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship in 2007. As part of the fellowship, he will be interning at Sandia National Laboratory in Livermore, California this summer. He is now in his second year of graduate studies as a Ph.D. candidate in chemical engineering, researching model reduction in chemical reaction systems.
