Eric Bjorkstedt (Biology and English) says that the last time he wrote, he had just started his career as a research scientist with NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, with a focus on helping out with the scientific side of recovery planning for Pacific salmon listed under the Endangered Species Act. That has been the news for much of the last seven years or so, save for the last, which has been a busy one with big changes.

First, he was lucky enough to get his dream job in his dream location. He is still working for the National Marine Fisheries Service, but has shifted gears rather dramatically. He is now in charge of developing a research program in fisheries oceanography off Northern California as part of a coast wide 'ocean observing' program. Which led to the 'second' big change: moving from Santa Cruz to the far north of California . . . beyond the Redwood Curtain . . . where the rivers are big, the mountains are close to the sea, and the communities are small . . . to his new lab/office at the Humboldt State University's marine lab. This position combines the best of the research/academic worlds: his job is to do a broad array of field research (at sea!) and theoretical/modeling work in a field that he happens to be very interested in, and he gets to do so in an academic environment complete with graduate students and the opportunity to teach the occasional course. The transition consisted of a grueling six months of more-or-less carrying two jobs and commuting six hours each way on a weekly to biweekly basis, but it has been worth it, and all in all, life is good. What makes life great, though, is the third 'change': he is now a happily married Blue Hen. Eric and Kimberly Bonine were married in the mountains above Santa Cruz last September--see the photo below (it's an o-cake-topus). Two UD friends from freshman year in Dickinson D (and UHP alums), Meg (Dearborn) Pasquerella and Jeanne Madej, made the trip out from the East Coast to share the day with them.
